About LEARN:

LEARN Inc. is a non-profit organization established as a legal entity in 1966 to contribute

funds to disadvantaged students seeking to enroll in programs of postsecondary education.

From 1966 through 1969, LEARN Inc. invested over $30,000 in scholarships and interest-free

loans to low-income and minority students.  Businesses and individuals residing in theLubbock, Texas area donated these resources.

Although these donations were financially significant to students, founding members of LEARN Inc. discovered that these students lacked much more than money -- they needed counseling, career guidance, technical assistance with college applications, links to community services, and encouragement from role models who had "walked the walk."

The History of LEARN Inc.

In November of 1969, with the help of many interested citizens, LEARN Inc. was successful in bringing the Educational Talent Search program to Lubbock, and in July of 1970 the program began its first full year of operation.  With the funds from the Department of Education, the project has grown to be the largest in Texas.

Under the umbrella of TRIO and LEARN Educational Talent Search, the LETS Go-Advance Program has served as an instrumental educational support program for at-risk middle school students within the Lubbock area since 1991.  The purpose of the program is to educate and assist at-risk students in achieving their academic and career goals.

In October 1991, LEARN Inc. successfully added the Educational Opportunity Center to serve the educational needs of adults in Lubbock and surrounding communities.

LEARN Inc. recently successfully added the Veterans Upward Bound Program in September 2003 to serve the educational needs of Veterans in the Lubbock, Hale, and Hockley County areas.  The purpose of the Veterans Upward Bound Program is to provide veterans with academic instruction in core curriculum subjects such as math through pre-calculus, English and lab sciences.  In addition to providing academic instruction, the Veterans Upward Bound Program also provides assistance in securing veterans services from other locally available resources.
